Overview

Baicalin + metformin is a combination therapy consisting of baicalin, a flavonoid compound derived from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Scutellaria baicalensis (黄芩), and metformin, a first-line oral antihyperglycemic agent widely used for type 2 diabetes. Baicalin exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and insulin-sensitizing effects. It has been shown to activate the IRS/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in hepatocytes, enhance glucose uptake, promote glycogen synthesis, and modulate gut microbiota composition. Metformin primarily acts by reducing hepatic gluconeogenesis and increasing peripheral insulin sensitivity without stimulating insulin secretion. The combination has been studied in preclinical models for synergistic effects on improving metabolic parameters such as glycemic control and insulin resistance in conditions like type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)[1][4][5]. Both agents have distinct but potentially complementary mechanisms targeting glucose metabolism.
