Overview
Baitong decoction is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation, originally documented in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Febrile Diseases), consisting of three primary herbal components: Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), and Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai). While traditionally indicated for 'Shaoyin' syndrome characterized by internal cold and diarrhea, modern pharmacological research has focused on its efficacy in treating ulcerative colitis (UC). The decoction functions as a multi-target anti-inflammatory agent that suppresses the Janus kinase (JAK)/Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) and Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathways. By inhibiting these pathways, Baitong decoction reduces the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, alleviates colonic tissue damage, and promotes the restoration of the intestinal mucosal barrier by increasing goblet cell numbers and mucus secretion.
