Overview

Baixiangdan is an investigational Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The formula is designed based on the TCM principle of soothing the liver to address emotional and physical symptoms associated with the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. It typically contains extracts from *Paeonia lactiflora* (Baishao), *Cyperus rotundus* (Xiangfu), and *Paeonia suffruticosa* (Danpi). Research suggests that Baixiangdan may exert its therapeutic effects by modulating the GABAergic and serotonergic systems, which are implicated in the pathophysiology of PMDD. It has been evaluated in Phase 1 safety trials and Phase 2 exploratory efficacy trials in China.
