Baiya SARS-CoV-2 Vax 1 is a plant-produced recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate for COVID-19. It consists of the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein fused to the Fc region of human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1), produced in *Nicotiana benthamiana* plants using a geminiviral vector system. The purified RBD-Fc fusion protein is formulated with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant, along with sucrose and glycine as excipients. The vaccine is administered intramuscularly and has demonstrated potent immunogenicity, eliciting neutralizing antibodies against multiple variants of concern in preclinical studies involving mice and non-human primates. Safety pharmacology and toxicology studies showed no significant safety concerns or pathological changes in animal models[3][4][5]. Developed by Baiya Phytopharm, a spin-off from Chulalongkorn University, this candidate represents one of the first plant-based COVID vaccines to reach clinical evaluation.
