Overview

Bakumijiogan (BJG) is a traditional herbal formula used in Kampo (Japanese traditional medicine) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as Mai Wei Di Huang Wan. It is a modification of the classic Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rokumijiogan) formula, created by adding Ophiopogon tuber (Bakumondo) and Schisandra fruit (Gomishi) to the base of six herbs: Rehmannia root, Cornus fruit, Dioscorea rhizome, Alisma rhizome, Poria sclerotium, and Moutan bark. BJG is primarily indicated for conditions involving 'dryness' and 'heat,' such as chronic dry cough, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. Its mechanism of action involves modulating the immune response by correcting the Th1/Th2 imbalance; specifically, it has been shown to increase the production of Th1 cytokines like interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) while suppressing Th2-mediated responses, including the production of IgE and pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-1α and TNF-α.
