Overview

BAL200 is a novel, bacteriophage-derived endolysin biologic drug being developed by iNtRON Biotechnology for the treatment of inhalational anthrax. As an endolysin, it acts as a molecular scissor that specifically targets and hydrolyzes the peptidoglycan within the cell wall of Bacillus anthracis, leading to rapid osmotic lysis and bacterial death. This mechanism is effective against various strains, including those resistant to standard post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) antibiotics. BAL200 was granted Orphan Drug Designation by the US FDA in 2018, highlighting its potential as a critical countermeasure against biothreat agents.
