Overview

Balaglitazone is a thiazolidinedione derivative and a small molecule drug that acts as a partial agonist of the peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). It was developed as an oral insulin sensitizer for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Balaglitazone exerts antihyperglycemic effects by modulating PPARγ, which plays a key role in regulating insulin sensitivity, triglyceride levels, and lipid metabolism. Compared to full PPARγ agonists, balaglitazone is associated with fewer side effects. The drug reached phase III clinical trials for type 2 diabetes but further development was discontinued by its developers[1][3][4].
