Balanced Salt Solution

Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) is a sterile, isotonic intraocular irrigating solution used during ophthalmic surgical procedures, such as phacoemulsification for cataract removal. It is composed of essential electrolytes, including sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride, along with sodium acetate and sodium citrate buffers. These components are formulated to maintain the physiological integrity and metabolism of the corneal endothelium and other intraocular tissues during surgery. In the context of the clinical trial NCT01334658 conducted by the Grupo de Estudos em Oftalmologia Clínica e Cirúrgica, BSS was evaluated for its impact on corneal endothelial cell density compared to a glucose-bicarbonate-Ringer lactate (GBRL) solution.
