Overview

Balanites aegyptiaca is a thorny shrub or tree, commonly known as the "desert date," native to arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and South Asia. It is traditionally used in various forms (fruit, seed oil, bark, roots) to treat ailments such as wounds, jaundice, intestinal worm infections, malaria, syphilis, epilepsy, dysentery, constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, stomach aches, asthma, and fever. The fruit and other plant parts are reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities[1][3][5][6][7]. Balanites aegyptiaca contains diverse phytochemicals, including saponins (notably diosgenin and yamogenin), polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, and pregnane glycosides[5][6][7]. Preclinical studies highlight a range of bioactive effects, but robust clinical data in humans are lacking and additional studies are required to confirm efficacy and safety[1]. The plant also has significant roles in traditional diets, agroforestry, and as a source of oil, charcoal, and animal fodder[2][7][8].
