Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Balanites aegyptiaca extract is a crude botanical extract derived from the desert date tree (*Balanites aegyptiaca*), which is native to arid regions of Africa and South Asia. Traditionally used in folk medicine for wound healing, intestinal worm infections, and dysentery, the extract has been investigated in modern research primarily for its antidiabetic properties. It contains active constituents such as steroidal saponins (furostanol type) and flavonol glycosides. Preclinical and clinical pilot studies suggest that the extract lowers blood glucose levels through the modulation of glucose-metabolizing enzymes, insulin-like and glitazone-like activities, and the inhibition of aldose reductase. Additionally, it has demonstrated in vitro schistosomicidal, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities.
