Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Balarishta is a traditional, polyherbal, fermented Ayurvedic medicine (an *Arishta*) used primarily to enhance strength and address neurological and musculoskeletal disorders related to *Vata* imbalance. [1, 2] Its name is derived from "Bala" (meaning strength), highlighting its main function as a restorative and nervine tonic. [3, 10] The formulation is a hydro-alcoholic liquid prepared through the fermentation of a decoction of herbs, which makes the active compounds more bioavailable. [3, 11] The self-generated alcohol content is typically between 5-10%. [2, 11] Key ingredients often include Bala (*Sida cordifolia*), Ashwagandha (*Withania somnifera*), and Jaggery (*Guda*), along with a variety of other herbs like Eranda, Rasna, and Gokshura. [1, 7, 10] Balarishta is widely used for conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, muscle weakness, paralysis, neuralgia, and general debility. [2, 9] Scientific studies have indicated its potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties, suggesting it may work by reducing inflammation, inhibiting cartilage-degrading enzymes like collagenase, and protecting against oxidative stress. [4, 18, 29861524, 22556860] It also possesses immunomodulatory effects. [8]
