Overview

Balhimycin is a novel glycopeptide antibiotic produced by the actinomycete Amycolatopsis balhimycina. It is structurally and mechanistically similar to vancomycin. Balhimycin acts by binding to the terminal Lys-D-Ala-D-Ala moiety of peptidoglycan precursors in bacterial cell walls, thereby inhibiting cell wall synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. Its primary activity is against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The compound was first isolated from a soil sample collected in the Himalayas and has been studied for its unique sugar moieties and biosynthetic pathway[1][2][4][7].
