Overview

Balipodect is a highly potent, selective, and orally active small molecule inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A), developed by Takeda for the treatment of schizophrenia. It acts by inhibiting PDE10A, an enzyme that regulates intracellular concentrations of cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP, particularly in the striatum—a brain region involved in movement and cognition. Balipodect demonstrated antipsychotic-like activity in animal models but was found to be poorly effective or ineffective for schizophrenia in clinical trials. Its development for schizophrenia was discontinued after reaching phase 2 trials. There is also evidence suggesting potential investigation or patent claims for its use in autism spectrum disorders[1][2][3][4][6].
