balofloxacin

Balofloxacin is an oral **fluoroquinolone antibiotic** small molecule developed by **Choongwae Pharma** in South Korea for the treatment of a range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections such as chronic bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and infections of the throat, tonsils, and female genital organs. It exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting the bacterial type II topoisomerases **DNA gyrase** and **topoisomerase IV**, enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By blocking these enzymes, balofloxacin disrupts bacterial DNA metabolism and leads to cell death. It has broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative, gram-positive, and anaerobic bacteria and is marketed in some countries, including South Korea and India, but is not approved by the FDA in the United States.
