Overview

Balsam of Peru is a natural resin obtained from the tree Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae. It consists primarily of benzyl cinnamate and benzyl benzoate and contains several known allergens such as cinnamic acid and vanillic acid[1][3][4]. Balsam of Peru is used topically for the local treatment of burns and wounds as an antiseptic; it also has applications as an expectorant in cough syrups and lozenges, a heart stimulant to increase blood pressure, a parasiticide (notably for scabies), and in suppositories for hemorrhoids[1][3][4]. In dentistry it is used to treat dry socket after tooth extraction[3][5]. Its mechanism includes mild antiseptic activity (inhibiting bacterial growth) via **bacterial cell wall inhibition**, promotion of **skin cell growth** (wound healing), and possible insecticidal effects against mites[4]. Balsam of Peru is widely used in cosmetics as a fragrance ingredient due to its aromatic profile similar to cinnamon or vanilla; it also serves as a flavoring agent in foods[1][6].
