Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Balsoprim** is a prescription fixed-dose oral suspension containing sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and bromhexine hydrochloride. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim sequentially inhibit bacterial folate synthesis, providing antibacterial activity, while bromhexine is a mucolytic that promotes clearance of airway secretions. In Spain, it is indicated for acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in patients without risk factors when mucolytic action is required, and for acute otitis media and acute bacterial sinusitis when usual first-line antibacterial agents are inappropriate. The marketed product is an oral suspension containing 26.6 mg/mL sulfamethoxazole, 5.4 mg/mL trimethoprim, and 0.5 mg/mL bromhexine hydrochloride.
