Overview

Baltaleucel-T is an autologous, cell-based immunotherapy designed to treat cancers associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, including Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (such as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma), nasopharyngeal carcinoma, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), and extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma. The therapy consists of a patient’s own T cells that are isolated and activated ex vivo to recognize multiple EBV antigens—specifically LMP1, LMP2, EBNA1, and BARF1—using dendritic cells presenting these viral proteins. The expanded population of EBV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes is then infused back into the patient to target and destroy cancer cells expressing these antigens. Baltaleucel-T was originally developed at Baylor College of Medicine using their proprietary technology platform and has been further developed by Cell Medica (now Kuur Therapeutics), which was acquired by Athenex. The product has received orphan drug designation for certain indications[1][2][3][4][7].
