Bamlanivimab + VIR-7831 is an investigational combination of two monoclonal antibodies, each binding to different regions of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Bamlanivimab (developed by Eli Lilly) targets the spike protein to block viral attachment and entry into human cells, neutralizing the virus. VIR-7831 (developed by Vir Biotechnology in partnership with GSK) is a dual-action antibody that blocks viral entry and may aid in clearance of infected cells; it binds to a conserved epitope on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which also exists on SARS-CoV-1, providing a high barrier to resistance. Combined preclinical and clinical data suggest this combination may provide additional antiviral effectiveness, especially against variants resistant to bamlanivimab alone. The combination has shown a significant reduction in viral load in clinical trial settings for mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in low-risk adults[1][2][4][6].
