Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of eight herbs, first described in 1732 AD during the Qing dynasty. According to TCM principles, its primary actions include drying and dissolving Phlegm, strengthening the Spleen, extinguishing Wind, and calming the Liver. It is traditionally used to address conditions characterized by dizziness, headache, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. Modern research suggests that the formula may exert its effects through various mechanisms, including improving brain circulation, reducing cerebral infarction volume, enhancing neurological functions, decreasing neuronal apoptosis, and exhibiting vasodilatory effects via the nitric oxide (NO)-soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) pathway, prostacyclin (PGI2), muscarinic pathways, and calcium channels. It has also been studied for its potential in regulating vascular endothelial function, inhibiting proliferation of adventitial fibroblasts and vascular smooth muscle cells, and modulating the renin-angiotensin system, as well as decreasing levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol.
