Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**bananin** is an experimental small-molecule antiviral compound and the prototype member of the bananins, a trioxa-adamantane-triol class derived from an adamantane-like scaffold linked to a pyridoxal-related moiety. It was reported as an inhibitor of the SARS coronavirus helicase, with activity against the ATPase and helicase functions of the viral nsp13 enzyme and corresponding inhibition of SARS-CoV replication in cell-based research systems. The compound appears to have remained a preclinical research agent rather than an approved or clinically developed medicine, and published work has focused mainly on SARS-CoV and broader exploratory anti-RNA-virus research.
