Bangasafe

Bangasafe is a 0.6% povidone-iodine (PVP-I) oro-nasal spray developed by the Bangladesh Reference Institute of Chemical Measurements (BRICM) under the leadership of Dr. Mala Khan. It is an antiseptic formulation designed to target the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the nasopharynx and oropharynx for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. PVP-I is a water-soluble iodophor consisting of a complex between iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone, where free iodine acts as a broad-spectrum virucidal agent. The formulation works by oxidizing critical microbial proteins and nucleic acids, effectively neutralizing the virus upon contact. Bangasafe has undergone Phase 3 clinical trials in Bangladesh to evaluate its virucidal efficacy and safety in COVID-19 positive patients and healthy volunteers.
