Bangle extract is derived from the rhizome of Zingiber purpureum Rosc., a tropical ginger species native to Southeast Asia. The primary active constituents are phenylbutenoid dimers known as banglenes (cis- and trans-banglene), which exhibit neurotrophic effects by promoting neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth in neural stem cells. Bangle extract has demonstrated the ability to enhance hippocampal neurogenesis and improve spatial learning and memory deficits in animal models of cognitive impairment, including those modeling early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Mechanistically, it activates canonical WNT/β-catenin signaling pathways and induces epigenetic changes such as altered histone acetylation. In addition to its neuroprotective properties, bangle extract has shown analgesic effects comparable to aspirin in preclinical studies and may ameliorate colonic inflammation and insulin resistance related to obesity. Traditionally used in Balinese medicine for a variety of ailments including pain relief, skin diseases, digestive issues, and as an anti-inflammatory agent[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].
