Overview

Bangpungtongseong-san (BTS) is a traditional polyherbal formula used in Korean and East Asian medicine for the treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory conditions. It is composed of 18 different herbal ingredients, including *Ephedra herba*, *Glycyrrhizae radix*, *Platycodi radix*, and *Rheum palmatum*. BTS is thought to exert its anti-obesity effects through a multi-targeted mechanism that includes the activation of adrenergic receptors to promote thermogenesis, the inhibition of enteric lipid absorption, and the modulation of the gut microbiota, specifically by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as *Akkermansia muciniphila*. Additionally, it demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). BTS is frequently studied in clinical trials in South Korea and Japan for its efficacy in reducing body mass index (BMI) and improving glucose metabolism.
