Overview

Banhasasim-tang (BST) is a traditional multi-herb botanical formula originating from East Asian medicine, where it is known as 'Banxia xiexin tang' in China and 'Hange-shashin-to' in Japan. It is primarily used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, including functional dyspepsia, chronic gastritis, and reflux esophagitis. The formula is typically composed of seven herbs: *Pinellia ternata*, *Scutellaria baicalensis*, *Zingiber officinale*, *Panax ginseng*, *Glycyrrhiza uralensis*, *Ziziphus jujuba*, and *Coptis chinensis*. Its mechanism of action involves prokinetic effects, specifically the modulation of gastrointestinal motility through the activation of interstitial cells of Cajal and smooth muscle cells in the stomach. In South Korea, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) has sponsored clinical trials evaluating BST syrup for symptom relief in patients with functional dyspepsia.
