Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Banxia Baizhu Tianma Tang Jiawei (半夏白术天麻汤加味) is a modified traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula based on the classic prescription "Banxia Baizhu Tianma Tang." The original formula is designed to resolve phlegm, dispel wind, strengthen the spleen, and calm dizziness. It is commonly used for symptoms such as dizziness, headache, vertigo due to internal wind and phlegm-dampness obstruction. The "Jiawei" (加味) indicates that additional herbs are included or modifications are made according to individual patient needs. Mechanistically, the formula acts by: - Resolving phlegm and dampness through ingredients like Pinellia ternata (Banxia), Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), Poria cocos (Fuling), and Citrus reticulata peel (Chenpi). - Calming endogenous wind with Gastrodia elata (Tianma). - Supporting spleen function to prevent further production of dampness/phlegm. - Additional herbs in "Jiawei" versions may target specific symptoms or comorbidities. Modern research suggests it can help regulate blood pressure, improve cerebral circulation, reduce brain edema, modulate nervous system function[5][6][8], exert anti-inflammatory effects[8], protect vascular endothelium[6], and has shown efficacy in treating hypertension with phlegm-dampness syndrome as well as various types of vertigo/dizziness[4][5][6]. It is often used in combination with other therapies such as acupuncture for enhanced effect[4].
