Overview

Baritekal is a hyperbaric 2% injectable solution of the local anesthetic prilocaine hydrochloride, an amino amide–type sodium channel–blocking agent used for intrathecal spinal anesthesia in adults undergoing short‑duration surgical procedures. It is injected into the lower spine, where prilocaine reversibly blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels in sensory, motor, and autonomic nerve fibers, reducing membrane sodium permeability and preventing action potential propagation to produce regional anesthesia from the waist down.[1][8] Baritekal is classified pharmacotherapeutically as a local anesthetic of the amide class (ATC N01BB04), with clinical use focused on short procedures due to its relatively rapid onset and intermediate duration of action.[1]
