Overview
Barium sulfate is an inorganic compound used as a radiographic contrast agent to enhance the visibility of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in diagnostic imaging procedures such as X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans. It works by coating the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines with a radiopaque material that is not absorbed into the body. This allows for clear visualization of diseased or damaged areas during imaging. Barium sulfate is administered orally or rectally and is primarily indicated for use in adults and pediatric patients undergoing GI tract examinations[1][2][3][5]. The compound occurs naturally as barite and has very low water solubility and high clearance from the body[3].
