Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Barley beta-glucan is a soluble dietary fiber extracted from the cell walls of barley grains. It consists primarily of (1→3),(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl units and is recognized for its cholesterol-lowering and heart health benefits. Barley beta-glucan works by forming a viscous solution in the gut, which slows nutrient absorption—including cholesterol and glucose—thereby reducing postprandial blood sugar spikes and lowering total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels[1][2][3][5]. It also acts as a prebiotic, modulating gut microbiota composition in ways that may further support cardiovascular health[6]. Additional proposed effects include immune modulation, improved glycemic control in diabetes, digestive health support, weight management through increased satiety, and topical wound healing; however, evidence for these uses varies in strength[2][3][5]. Barley beta-glucan is generally regarded as safe with no significant toxicity observed even at high intake levels[7].
