Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Barley leaf essence is a botanical extract derived from the young leaves of the barley plant (*Hordeum vulgare*). It is primarily recognized for its potent antioxidant and hypolipidemic properties, which are attributed to its high content of flavonoids (such as saponarin and lutonarin), vitamins, minerals, and enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD). Research in animal models, particularly rabbits, has demonstrated that barley leaf essence can significantly lower plasma levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols while increasing the resistance of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) to oxidation. By reducing oxidative stress and improving lipid profiles, the essence helps inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic lesions in the vascular intima, suggesting a potential role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
