BARYTHRAX is the world’s first recombinant protein anthrax vaccine. It is designed to prevent anthrax infection caused by Bacillus anthracis, a highly lethal and class-1 infectious disease that poses significant bioterrorism risk. Unlike traditional vaccines made from attenuated or cultured non-pathogenic Bacillus anthracis (which may contain residual toxins), BARYTHRAX uses protective antigen (PA) proteins produced through genetic recombination techniques. The PA protein acts as a gateway for two major Bacillus anthracis toxins—lethal factor and edema factor—to enter host cells; by targeting PA, the vaccine stimulates an immune response that neutralizes these toxins and prevents disease progression. This recombinant approach eliminates risks associated with live or inactivated bacteria and improves safety. Clinical trials demonstrated robust antibody responses with no serious adverse events; animal studies confirmed long-term immunity and high survival rates after challenge with virulent spores[1][2][5][7].
