Overview
Basil refers to aromatic herbs of the genus *Ocimum*, primarily *Ocimum basilicum* (sweet basil) and *Ocimum sanctum* (holy basil or tulsi). In clinical and pharmacological research, basil is investigated for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, attributed to bioactive constituents such as rosmarinic acid, orientin, linalool, and methyl chavicol. It is studied in various forms, including dried leaves for dietary intervention in cardiovascular and metabolic health, and concentrated extracts for conditions like recurrent aphthous stomatitis (oral ulcers), dyspepsia, and cognitive enhancement. Preclinical studies suggest that holy basil can reduce gastric acid secretion and increase mucus production, while its antioxidant profile helps neutralize free radicals and modulate inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha.
