Overview

Basiliximab + cyclosporine refers to the combined use of two immunosuppressive agents given together, primarily as induction and maintenance therapy to prevent acute rejection in organ transplant recipients, especially in renal (kidney) transplantation. Basiliximab is a chimeric (human-murine) monoclonal antibody that blocks interleukin-2 receptor alpha (IL-2Rα, CD25) on activated T-lymphocytes, thereby preventing IL-2-mediated lymphocyte activation, a key event in transplant rejection. Cyclosporine is a calcineurin inhibitor that suppresses T-cell activation by inhibiting IL-2 production and other cytokines, further reducing immune-mediated graft rejection. The combination regimen is considered effective and generally well tolerated, and is often used together with other immunosuppressants (such as corticosteroids and mycophenolate mofetil or azathioprine), but the core combination remains basiliximab and cyclosporine[1][2][3][5][7].
