Overview

This combination comprises **basiliximab** (a monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin-2 receptor alpha chain/CD25), **cyclosporine** (a calcineurin inhibitor), and **mycophenolate mofetil** (an antimetabolite immunosuppressant). All three agents are immunosuppressive drugs routinely used together as induction and maintenance therapy to prevent acute rejection in renal transplantation. Basiliximab binds to the CD25 subunit of the IL-2 receptor on activated T lymphocytes, blocking IL-2-mediated T-cell activation and proliferation. Cyclosporine suppresses T-cell activity by inhibiting calcineurin, thus preventing the transcription of interleukin-2 and other cytokines. Mycophenolate mofetil inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase in lymphocytes, blocking de novo purine synthesis and impairing lymphocyte proliferation. This regimen is used to improve graft survival and minimize acute rejection rates in kidney transplantation[1][2][4][5][6][8].
