Overview

Bassia hyssopifolia pollen extract is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Bassia hyssopifolia* plant, commonly known as five-horn smotherweed. It is utilized as a biological product for both the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. In diagnostic settings, the extract is used in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify patients sensitized to this specific weed pollen, which is a significant cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis and asthma in arid and semi-arid regions. Therapeutically, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (AIT), also known as desensitization. The mechanism of action involves the repeated administration of increasing doses of the allergen to modulate the patient's immune response, typically shifting from a Th2-biased allergic response to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) mediated tolerance. This process leads to the production of blocking antibodies (IgG4), a reduction in allergen-specific IgE levels, and decreased recruitment of inflammatory cells like mast cells and eosinophils to the mucosal surfaces.
