Bassia scoparia pollen

Bassia scoparia pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Bassia scoparia* plant (formerly known as *Kochia scoparia*), commonly referred to as firebush or Mexican fireweed. This biologic product is primarily utilized as a diagnostic reagent in skin testing (percutaneous or intradermal) to confirm sensitization in patients suspected of having Type I hypersensitivity to this weed pollen. The extract works by cross-linking allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, which results in a characteristic wheal-and-flare reaction. In addition to its diagnostic role, the extract is used in allergen immunotherapy (AIT) to desensitize patients and reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma.
