Overview

Batroxase is a metalloproteinase enzyme isolated from the venom of the *Bothrops atrox* snake. It functions as a direct fibrinolytic and thrombolytic agent by cleaving both the alpha and beta chains of fibrinogen and dissolving fibrin clots, independent of plasminogen activation. This action gives it antithrombotic properties. Batroxase also exhibits weak hemorrhagic activity and can hydrolyze extracellular matrix components such as type IV collagen and fibronectin. Its potential therapeutic applications include the treatment of thrombogenic disorders and the prevention of adhesions.
