Overview

Battey skin test (BST) antigen is a diagnostic biologic reagent derived from *Mycobacterium intracellulare* (historically known as the Battey bacillus). It is utilized in the differential diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to identify cross-reactivity caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). When administered intradermally via the Mantoux method, the antigen elicits a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response in individuals previously sensitized to the *Mycobacterium avium* complex (MAC). By comparing the induration size of a BST reaction to that of a standard Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), clinicians can better distinguish between true *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* infection and false-positive TST results resulting from environmental mycobacterial exposure.
