Overview

Batyl alcohol (1-O-octadecyl-sn-glycerol) is a naturally occurring 1-O-alkylglycerol found in marine organisms, such as shark liver oil, and soft corals. It serves as a critical metabolic precursor in the biosynthesis of ether-linked phospholipids, specifically plasmalogens. Because batyl alcohol contains a pre-formed ether bond, it can bypass the initial peroxisomal enzymatic steps (catalyzed by GNPAT and AGPS) that are often defective in peroxisomal biogenesis disorders. Consequently, it is primarily investigated as a substrate replacement therapy for conditions like Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata (RCDP) and Zellweger Spectrum Disorder (ZSD) to restore peripheral plasmalogen levels. Beyond its role in lipid replacement, batyl alcohol has demonstrated experimental potential in attenuating atherosclerosis, improving cardiac conduction in lipid-deficient models, and protecting against radiation-induced bone marrow damage.
