Overview

BAY 86-9596 (also known as [18F]FRP-170) is an 18F-labeled radiopharmaceutical developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer for imaging cellular hypoxia. It is a 2-nitroimidazole derivative that undergoes intracellular reduction in the absence of oxygen, leading to the formation of reactive intermediates that bind to cellular proteins and become trapped within hypoxic tissues. This mechanism allows for the non-invasive detection and quantification of hypoxia, which is a critical factor in tumor progression, resistance to radiotherapy, and certain inflammatory conditions. Originally developed by Bayer and later part of the Life Molecular Imaging portfolio, BAY 86-9596 has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for various cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), breast cancer, and head and neck cancer, as well as for imaging inflammation.
