Bazhengsan (八正散) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula primarily indicated for the treatment of damp-heat in the bladder, a condition characterized by symptoms such as painful, frequent, and urgent urination, as well as hematuria. The formula is a combination of several herbal ingredients, typically including Akebia stem (Mu Tong), Plantain seed (Che Qian Zi), Knotweed (Bian Xu), Dianthus (Qu Mai), Talcum (Hua Shi), Gardenia fruit (Zhi Zi), Rhubarb (Da Huang), and Licorice (Gan Cao), often with the addition of Juncus pith (Deng Xin Cao). It functions by clearing heat, purging fire, and promoting diuresis. In modern clinical research, Bazhengsan is being evaluated for its efficacy in treating recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTI), acute bacterial lower urinary tract infections in children, and managing chemotherapy-induced side effects like pyrotinib-associated diarrhea.
