Overview

BBIBP-CorV is an inactivated virus vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products, a subsidiary of Sinopharm, to prevent COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The vaccine utilizes a chemically inactivated version of the HB02 strain of SARS-CoV-2, which is cultivated in Vero cells and subsequently treated with beta-propiolactone. This process ensures the virus cannot replicate while preserving the structural integrity of its proteins, particularly the spike protein, to elicit an immune response. Formulated with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity, BBIBP-CorV induces the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses against multiple viral antigens. It was the first Chinese-developed COVID-19 vaccine to receive emergency use listing from the World Health Organization (WHO) and has been widely deployed globally.
