BBV120

BBV120 (ZIKAVAC) is an inactivated Zika virus vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech. It is derived from a Zika virus strain isolated from a patient and is formulated with an adjuvant, typically aluminum hydroxide, to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine is designed to elicit a robust neutralizing antibody response against the Zika virus envelope (E) protein, which is critical for viral entry into host cells. By inducing these antibodies, the vaccine aims to provide protection against Zika virus infection and its associated severe complications, such as microcephaly in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. BBV120 was the first Zika vaccine candidate to enter clinical trials in India and has completed Phase 1 evaluation for safety and immunogenicity.
