Overview
BBV121 is a purified, inactivated whole virion Zika virus vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech. It is designed to prevent infection by the Zika virus. The vaccine contains chemically inactivated (e.g., formalin-inactivated) Zika virions and uses an adjuvant such as alum to enhance immunogenicity. Its mechanism of action is immunostimulation—by presenting inactivated viral particles to the immune system, it induces protective neutralizing antibody responses against the Zika virus. Preclinical studies demonstrated protection against both Asian and African strains of the virus in animal models. Clinical development reached phase 1 trials for prevention of Zika virus infection[2][3][7].
