BBV87 is an inactivated whole virion chikungunya vaccine candidate developed by Bharat Biotech. The vaccine is based on a strain derived from the East, Central, South African (ECSA) genotype of the chikungunya virus (specifically CHIK/03/06, an Indian 2006 isolate). It uses beta-propiolactone for viral inactivation and is formulated with an adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. Preclinical studies demonstrated robust neutralizing antibody responses and protection against viremia in animal models. Phase 1 clinical trials showed that BBV87 elicited high levels of neutralizing antibodies and was well tolerated with no significant safety concerns. The vaccine is currently being evaluated in pivotal Phase II/III clinical trials across multiple countries (including India, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Guatemala, and Thailand) to assess its safety and immunogenicity in healthy individuals aged 12–65 years. The development program aims for WHO prequalification to enable global access[1][2][3][5][6][7][8].
