Overview
The BC-PIV SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is an intranasal viral vector vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of COVID-19. It was jointly developed by MediciNova, BioComo, and Mie University using the proprietary BC-PIV platform technology. This platform utilizes a non-transmissible recombinant human parainfluenza virus type 2 (hPIV2) vector engineered to display SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antigens (specifically the S1 subunit) on its surface. The vaccine is designed to elicit both systemic IgG and local mucosal IgA neutralizing antibodies at the site of infection without the requirement for an adjuvant. Although preclinical studies in mice showed promising immunogenicity, MediciNova announced the discontinuation of the program in March 2021 to focus resources on other clinical developments.
