Overview

BCD-148 is a biosimilar of eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets complement protein C5. It acts as a complement C5 inhibitor, blocking complement activation to treat paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Developed by Biocad, BCD-148 is administered intravenously and is intended as an alternative to the originator drug Soliris® (eculizumab). The drug has undergone Phase 1 and Phase 3 clinical trials in Russia for PNH treatment but has not yet received approval. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of the complement cascade at the C5 component, preventing formation of membrane attack complex and subsequent hemolysis.
