Overview

BCG for Therapeutic Use, developed by Chengdu CoenBiotech Co., Ltd, is a live-attenuated strain of *Mycobacterium bovis* used as an intravesical immunotherapy for the treatment and prevention of recurrence of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Upon instillation into the bladder, the bacteria attach to the urothelium and are internalized by bladder cancer cells and macrophages, triggering a robust local inflammatory response. This response involves the recruitment of various immune cells, including T lymphocytes, natural killer cells, and macrophages, and the release of Th1-type cytokines, which collectively mediate the destruction of residual tumor cells. It is currently being evaluated in Phase III clinical trials for patients with medium-to-high-risk NMIBC to prevent postoperative recurrence.
