Overview

BCG MEDAC is a biologic immunotherapy consisting of live attenuated Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) bacteria, specifically the RIVM strain derived from *Mycobacterium bovis*. Developed and marketed by medac Pharma, it is indicated for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), including the curative treatment of carcinoma in situ and the prophylactic treatment to prevent tumor recurrence following transurethral resection. The drug is administered intravesically via a catheter directly into the bladder. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating a local, non-specific immune response; the presence of the attenuated bacteria in the bladder wall activates host immune cells, such as T-lymphocytes and macrophages, which then target and destroy residual malignant urothelial cells. Treatment typically follows an induction phase of weekly instillations for six weeks, often followed by a maintenance therapy schedule.
