Overview

This refers to the co-administration of the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine and the Hepatitis B vaccine as investigated in the Early Life Vaccines and Immunity Study (ELVIS) conducted by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. The study is a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the heterologous (non-specific) immunomodulatory effects of these two standard neonatal vaccines when administered at birth. BCG is a live attenuated bacterial vaccine derived from *Mycobacterium bovis* used for tuberculosis prevention, while the Hepatitis B vaccine is a recombinant protein-based vaccine. The research specifically examines how the timing and combination of these vaccines influence neonatal cytokine responses and innate immune development, with findings suggesting that Hepatitis B vaccine co-administration can modulate the heterologous effects of BCG in a sex-differential manner.
