Overview
This refers to the combined or sequential administration of the **BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin)** vaccine and the **measles vaccine** as evaluated in the **MATVAC (Maternal and Infant BCG and Measles Vaccination Study)**. Conducted by the **Bandim Health Project** in Guinea-Bissau, this phase 4 factorial randomized controlled trial investigates the **non-specific effects (NSE)** of these live attenuated vaccines. While BCG is traditionally used for tuberculosis and the measles vaccine for measles, research suggests these vaccines can strengthen the immune system against a broad range of unrelated infectious diseases through a process known as **trained immunity**. The MATVAC study specifically explores whether vaccinating mothers with these live vaccines can enhance the health, immunity, and survival of both the mothers and their infants.
